Welcome to Milwaukee Professional Fire Fighters
Milwaukee Firefighters Online

Brothers and Sisters,

WALTS is fast approaching and NOW is the time to sign up.

If you have not already done so, please register your local for the 2017 WALTS being held October 9-11, 2017, at the Milwaukee Hilton City Center in Milwaukee.  This year's event will offer a wide variety of classes that will be very beneficial to your local, as well as individual members.  Once again this year we are offering each local 2 free registrations to WALTS.  Please don’t miss out on this opportunity.

The deadline for hotel reservations is FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND.  That is only a week away.  After this date, we can no longer guarantee that you will get the PFFW reduced rate or even if there will be rooms available.  So even if you don’t have your members registrations in, or don’t quite know who you are sending, please book your hotel rooms NOW.

The hotel link can be found on the website, PFFW.org, or in the WALTS brochure that is attached.

Remember, Monday October 9th is our Labor Management day.  You can bring your chiefs on this day at no charge.  This will allow you to have your chiefs come and see that by working together on issues, we all benefit.

If you have any questions feel free to contact your PFFW liaison or call the PFFW office.  I look forward to seeing you all at WALTS in October and until then….stay safe.

please go to the document library page sign in and look for election policy change and contract negotiation change.

The Policy Committee met at Monday August 28th @9AM at the Union Hall. We discussed and unanimously passed the new Election Commission Policy. Also the Executive Board met on Wednesday September 6th and also unanimously recommended to pass.
We also are requesting a slight change to the contract negotiations policy. That also passed unanimously. Our suggestion is:
In paragraph 4, sentence 6 will be changed from “There will then be a secret ballot vote at the union hall after each special contract meeting for 4 hours.”
In the new revised edition changed to “There will then be a secret ballot vote at the union hall during each special contract meeting and for 4 hours following each meeting.”
The change essentially allows voting during the special ratification informational meetings and not soley after.
I am including the original contract negotiations policy and the revised edition, along with the new Election Commission Policy.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Good afternoon,
I am heading up a firehouse t-shirt drive. These shirts will be sent to the Texas State Fire Marshal’s office, who is collecting and distributing department/firehouse t-shirts to Texas firefighters and their families that were directly affected by Hurricane Harvey.  If your firehouse would be willing to donate any unused t-shirts for this initiative, please put them aside on the joker stand or boss’s office (could be one in the same) and I will come around and collect them.  Any amount and any sizes are acceptable and appreciated.

Brian Cox Update

`This update is an appeal to the membership for more donation days. This message is from Brian himself.

It's hard to talk to everyone. Some people are FB people, some call or text, some follow caring bridge, so I'll do my best to update. Today is about a month since my stem cell transplant. I had a PET scan today and saw the doc. Didn't get the news I wanted. The scan showed spots of cancer almost the same as my last scan. So, the high dose chemo and stem cell transplant did not work. At best it kept things in check. So, 4th type of chemo that wasn't successful. On to # 5. Thankfully there's still some options but this is getting pretty old

As you have seen from Brian's update of his treatment he is still going to need some more days donated. He presently has till 9/10 before he runs out of donation days and will be forced to use accrued time off. He is getting close to his maximum allowed time in the donor program of 2080 hours and he is currently allowed (11) additional donation days. If we can find it in our hearts to donate (11)additional days Brian will be at the max allowed donor time. Brian and Shalon appreciate everything we have done for them, including the days already given. Brian is staying positive despite the setbacks he has encountered. There are still treatment options he can pursue and he will continue to battle. Brian also has a blog to post about his progress. You can find that link here.
If you have any questions, please contact me (or Brian - bricox79@gmail.com) .
Thank you

New York Marathon 2017: Medina Team For Kids Charity

Hello to all…

It has been 15 years since I have run a marathon and now that I am retired for just over a year, my deciding to run the New York Marathon 2017 was because my son, Matthew received an entry into the marathon through the lottery system. I was very happy for him and my wife and I thought we would go there to watch him run. I have run 24 marathons in the past and I know the experience when one crosses the finish line after 26.2 miles. It is very euphoric and emotional, but as I said, 15 years since I have done one so I thought to myself that it would be a neat experience to be a part of and now that I am 64 years old, I may not ever get a chance again. So the road to the marathon begins here when you click above and you will understand the charity I am running for. I now have motivation to train for that day but more importantly to connect with people and ask for donations to help their cause. Thank you very much and I know when I run that day you will be there in spirit to carry me across that finish line. Sincerely, Raul Medina

Intentional Car Fires have Milwaukee Firefighters Training to Become Detectives

It's a call Milwaukee Firefighters are seeing more than ever before: A car engulfed in flames, abandoned on a quiet road or in a parking lot.

Their first concern is putting out the flames. Their second, figuring out how the fire started.

"What we're trying to do is determine whether or not the car fires that we do see in the city of Milwaukee are accidental, or whether they're arson," says Captain Schuyler Belott.

Already this year, Milwaukee Firefighters have been dispatched to 249 vehicle fires, that's more than 2 per day.

"We certainly have a problem in the city of Milwaukee with stolen vehicles, and they're being used for other crimes, and then at the end burned," says Belott.

So how can firefighters pull evidence from a burned out shell of a car?

"It takes a lot of studying," says Forensic Examiner Mike Riegert.

On a recent April weekend, about 30 firefighters and police officers took part in a first-of-its-kind training in Milwaukee.

Riegert and his forensic team started 10 fires on 10 different cars, simulating real-life scenarios for first responders.

"We're simulating some arson fires, some electrical fires, some mechanical failures," says Riegert.

Riegert travels from state to state, training law enforcement and firefighters on how to detect arson.

"Vehicle fires are a lot different than structure fires," he says. "There really aren't a lot of people that specialize in vehicles."

The first step: Figuring out where the fire started.

Riegert says most arsonists act quickly, hoping to start the car on fire and get away. That often involves pouring gas on the interior seats, which leaves a visible pattern after it's burned away.

"You identify the place with the greatest amount of damage to find the origin of the fire," says Belott. "There's a lot of different ways it can happen."

Out of the 800 active firefighters with MFD, only 30 are trained as fire investigators. That number will grow by 50% this year, thanks to trainings like this one.

"What I think we're seeing is more of those fires that aren't necessarily accidental or mechanical," says Belott. "The more investigators we have, the better job we can do."
